Sean Hillen | New Work FOR 6 DAYS ONLY A new body of work by the important Irish artist Seán Hillen will be shown for the first time in the Gallery of Photography, Dublin. In this eagerly anticipated new work, Hillen brings his lively visual intelligence to bear on contested myths circulating in the post 9/11 global community. Hillen is one of the most significant artists of his generation. Best known for his ‘Irelantis’ series, where competing myths and visions cohabit a witty montage, Hillen has also undertaken sculptural pieces, most recently the Omagh Bomb Memorial which has received both popular and critical acclaim. As the ‘Irelantis’ images have come to be seen as the most vivid and emblematic expression of the dreams and anxieties of ‘Celtic Tiger’ Ireland, his works from the ‘Troubles’ era, based on his own gritty photographs, have become widely-known and studied as ‘masterworks’ of the medium. At a major exhibition of his work in London in 1999, Hillen befriended a picture researcher, whose name he recognised as one of the victims on the No.30 bus in the ‘7/7’ attacks in London. This caused him to research more deeply these events and resulted in this new body of work, which pick up on the new lexicon surrounding recent controversies in political history, as “False-Flag Operations” and “Controlled Demolition” loom in the contemporary psyche. On Friday 14th November from 6-8pm there will be a reception with a short performance by comedian Kevin McAleer at 7pm. Gallery of Photography is open: Tuesday - Saturday 11am-6pm and on Sunday from 1pm-6pm All events and access to the Gallery are free.
