Press Photographers Association of Ireland AIB Photojournalism Awards 2007 February 21st - March 02nd 2008 The AIB Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) Awards Exhibition will open to the public in the Gallery of Photography on Wednesday February 21st. The AIB PPAI Photojournalisim Awards acknowledge the most interesting and creative Irish press photographs from the past year, rewarding quality and excellence in this dynamic field. This annual exhibition brings together the best work by Irish press photographers both at home and abroad. The exhibition has been selected by an international panel of expert judges from over 1600 photographs submitted by more than 121 photographers. It provides a unique pictorial showcase of Ireland in 2007. The international panel of judges comprised chairperson Bride Rosney, Director of Communications, RTÉ, Mr. Ian Day, Picture Editor, Yorkshire Post, and Mr. Jon Levy, Foto 8, London. Commenting on the entries, the judges said they were hugely impressed with the talent and skill displayed in the entries, which include powerful images from a broad spectrum of press photography, including news, sports, politics and the arts. Brenda Moriarty, Head of Brand Management, AIB, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the AIB Photojournalism Awards for the sixth year running. Each year, the work of Ireland’s press photographers strengthens, and always provides an interesting illustrative record of the previous year, encapsulating the trials and tribulations of everyday life.” Ray Mc Manus, President of the PPAI, said: "We represent press photographers from all over Ireland. Each year the competition continues to excel and our overseas judges are again very impressed with the high quality and calibre of Irish press photography. That talent is underlined and supported by AIB’s commitment and sponsorship of these prestigious awards and the exhibition – which captures a unique look at Irish life.” The winners of the AIB Photojournalism Awards 2007 were announced at a gala banquet in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dublin, on the 15th February 2008. Prizes were awarded in the categories of News, Features, Sports, Action, Sports Features, People, Individual Study, The Arts, Politics, Picture Story and a special award for Humour. An AIB PPAI Masterclass will be held in the Irish Film Institute on Monday, February 25th at 10.30am to coincide with the showing of the exhibition at the Gallery of Photography.
