AIB Press Photographers Association of Ireland Awards 2006

February 21st - March 4th 2007

The AIB Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) Awards Exhibition will open to the public in the Gallery of Photography on Wednesday February 21st. The AIB PPAI Awards acknowledge the most interesting and creative Irish press photographs from the past year, rewarding quality and excellence in this dynamic field.

This annual exhibition brings together the best work by Irish press photographers both at home and abroad. The exhibition has been selected by an international panel of expert judges from over 1400 photographs submitted by more than 122 photographers. It provides a unique pictorial showcase of Ireland in 2006.

Prizes were awarded in the categories of News, Features, Sports, Action, Sports Features, People, Individual Study, The Arts, Politics, Picture Story and a special award for Humour. Chairperson of the judging panel, Bride Rosney, is RTE's Director of Communications and has previously worked as a communications consultant, primarily dealing with accounts in the spheres of new technologies and the arts.

Chairperson Bride Rosney, RTE (Dublin), Sophie Batterbury (Associate Picture Editor, The Independent London) and Seamus Conlan (Founder & COO, WorldPictureNetwork), said they were hugely impressed with the skill and talent displayed in the entries, which included strong images from a broad spectrum of press photography, including news, sports, politics and the arts.

Brenda Moriarty, Head of Brand Management, AIB said: AIB is delighted to be sponsoring the PPAI Awards for the fifth year running. Each year the standard and quality of the photographs improves and always provides an interesting illustrative record of Ireland during the previous year, encapsulating the trials and tribulations of everyday life.

Billy Higgins, President of the PPAI said: We represent press photographers from all over Ireland. Each year the competition continues to impress our overseas judges with the high quality and calibre of Irish press photography. That talent is underlined by AIBs commitment and sponsorship of the prestigious awards and exhibition, providing a unique pictorial showcase of Ireland in 2006.

An AIB PPAI Masterclass will be held in the Irish Film Institute on Tuesday, February 27th at 10.30am to coincide with the showing of the exhibition at the Gallery of Photography. Places are strictly limited and so booking is advised. To book a place, please contact the Gallery of Photography on 6714654.
