For Evermore: Fading Evidence of the Great War
Gallery of Photography, Dublin. 10 May - 3 June 2000
Ulster Museum, Belfast. 29th June - 31st July 2000

The First World War was perhaps the most traumatic event in world history. Yet now, some eighty years on, how do we remember it?

This is the central concern of For Evermore: fading evidence of the Great War. The exhibition was curated for the Gallery by Peter Neill and brings together the work of four artists: J.S. Cartier (France), Peter Cattrell (Scotland); David Keith (N.Ireland) and Chris Harrison (England).

J.S. Cartier's large-format black and white landscape studies analyse the intersection between landscape, memory and archaeology. In bringing to the fore the passage of time since the conflict itself, Cartier's work nevertheless heightens the human dimension of the horrors of the front.

Also in black and white, Peter Cattrell's work takes a lyrical approach to the landscape, inspired by the literature and poetry of the war.

In contrast, David Keith adopts a more ironic stance: his lush, full-colour landscapes are presented in light boxes, somewhat like advertisements.

Also working in colour, Chris Harrison is showing huge panoramas of war memorials from Britain and Ireland. His series includes a work on the memorial at Islandbridge in Dublin which was specially commissioned for this exhibition.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated Publication, For Evermore, which includes a discussion of issues of memory, representation and the Great War by Kevin Myers (Irish Times), Keith Jeffery (University of Ulster); Nicholas Allen (Trinity College, Dublin) and Peter Neill (curator).

The exhibition was opened by Myles Dungan, author and broadcaster, on Tuesday 9th May, at 6.30pm. Thanks to Becks Beer and Gordon's Gin for their support. Thanks to sponsorship from the French Embassy, Dublin, the British Council and the University of Ulster and the Arts Council, all the exhibiting artists were present. They spoke about their work in a Panel Discussion on Wednesday, 10th May at 2pm in the Gallery.

Exhibition, Bookshop and Darkrooms are Open Mon-Sat 11am-6pm. Admission free.
