Pinhole image entitled 'Liffey View' | Artist; 2007 Workshop Participant PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY – SUMMER WORKSHOPS JUNE 2008 These intensive week-long summer workshops offered a comprehensive introduction to the exciting world of photography, from Pinhole to the digital age. In this practical, hands-on course, participants received one-to-one tuition, made their own pinhole camera, took their own pictures, developed and printed their own photographs in the darkroom. In addition to the analog process partcipants were also introduced to digital scanning, manipulation and inkjet print output. The course was ideal for both young people or adults. No photographic experience was necessary. All equipment/materials were supplied. From their base in the Gallery of Photography, participants travelled by foot to selected locations for shoots, returning to the Gallery of Photography darkrooms for processing and printing their work. The pinhole photography workshop is one of the most enjoyable and creative workshops held each year in the Gallery. The images displayed in the online gallery from the Summer 2008 workshop are testiment to that. Upon completing the workshop partcipants images have been included in an online exhibition hosted by the gallery, each participant also received a printed copy of their favorite image and a gift voucher for a darkroom session. Course Leaders: Aoife Johanna Giles & Darragh Shanahan Aoife Johanna Giles is a graduate of NCAD and University of Wolverhampton who works as a freelance photopgrapher with extensive teaching experience both here and abroad. Darragh Shanahan is an experienced photographer and educator, and a member of staff at the Gallery of Photography. The Pinhole Photography Workshop was a five day intensive course. It took place over one week, Monday through Friday from 12 midday to 5pm each day. Morning session 12 midday to 2pm / Afternoon session 3pm to 5pm There were two individual week long workshops; Workshop 1: June 16th (Monday) – 20th (Friday) inclusive Workshop 2: June 23rd (Monday) - 27th (Friday) inclusive No. of Places There were 6 places on each course. DRAFT PROGRAMME
Understanding the principles behind pinhole photography. This will include a presentation of examples and an introduction to various camera types. Making pinhole cameras using found objects such as cardboard, cocoa tins, etc. Concluding with an initial image capture test.
Discussion about different genres of photography. Making exposures with pinhole cameras. Location Shooting. Developing and printing work in the darkroom to gauge success of exposures. Exposures can be made over night also and then developed the following morning.
Portraiture/ self-portraiture sessions with participants’ own pinhole cameras and with a 6x6-format camera. Developing and printing work in the darkroom.
Selection of favourite pinhole print for digital scanning. Supervised introduction to digital editing techniques, enabling participants to enhance their final print during a Photoshop workshop.
Photoshopping & printing of edited images. Students will have the option on this final day to produce either an analog or digital reproduction of their work for presentation.
